Riverside National Cemetery Hours

So Cal Bagpiper Forrest Cormany escorting Medal of Honor recipient Col. Lewis Millett to his final resting place at Riverside National Cemetery.

About Riverside National Cemetery

Riverside National Cemetery Hours is the third largest and busiest veterans’ cemetery in the United States. It was begun in 1976 with the transfer of 740 acres from March Air Force Base. The cemetery was dedicated on November 11, 1978. Additional acreage was added in 2003. The cemetery at this date covers 921 acres. R.N.C. (Riverside National Cemetery) is the home of the Medal of Honor Memorial. Dedicated in 1999, its walls feature the names of all medal recipients. Riverside National Cemetery hours of visitation are from 8 a.m. to sunset.

Eligibility

Burial in a national cemetery is open to all members of the armed forces who have met a minimum active duty service requirement and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.

A Veteran’s spouse, widow or widower, minor dependent children, and under certain conditions, unmarried adult children with disabilities may also be eligible for burial. Eligible spouses and children may be buried even if they predecease the Veteran.

Members of the reserve components of the armed forces who die while on active duty or who die while on training duty, or were eligible for retired pay, may also be eligible for burial. For more information visit Veterans’ Administration’s eligibility page.

The Committal Service

Riverside National Cemetery schedules upwards of 40 to 65 services a day. Because of the high volume of burials per day, committal services are not performed at the graveside, instead, the service is held at a “committal shelter”. The length of the committal service is no more than 20 to 30 minutes.

For casket burial or cremation, your funeral director will schedule your service date and time on your behalf with Riverside National Cemetery. For cremation when a funeral home is not involved, you may schedule your service directly with Riverside National Cemetery.

On the Day

On the day of the service when you arrive at the cemetery, stop at the information booth located just inside the main gate. The information booth will direct you to the proper staging area. The staging areas are numbered 1 through 9. The staging area is just where family and friends will park a half hour prior to their service time. At your scheduled service time, a cemetery representative will come out to greet you and briefly review the proper documents and then escort you to the designated committal shelter.

Riverside National Cemetery hours of visitation are 8 a.m. to sunset, 7 days a week.
